Building a Log Cabin

Building a log cabin in your garden can be a great feature and really make your garden stand out. You can customise the look with many things such as decorations and surrounding the log cabin with plants and hanging baskets.

There are a number of uses for a log cabin. You could use it as a play area for your children which is great for getting them into the garden and away from computer games! If you don't use it for this then you can turn it into a work out area with weights so that you can have some private time keeping fit if you wish. Or even just throw in some soft chairs and sofas and use it as a relaxation area after a hard day's work in your garden.

The uses really are extensive which makes building a log cabin a great use of your garden space which can be very limited if you have a small garden.

What Tools will you Need?

Each log cabin will differ slightly in terms of the tools you'll need. But in general here are the tools that you may require -

  • Hammer
  • Screwdrivers, both Philips and flathead
  • A tape measure
  • A drill with 2mm drill bits
  • Step ladder
  • Stanley knife
  • Spirit level
  • A Wood saw

There may be more specialised tools that you'll need depending on the make and model of the log cabin but in general these are the tools that will get you started at least.

Log cabins, along with garden sheds will normally need at least two people to build it. So make sure that you have some help before starting to build.

An Example Log Cabin

Do I need to do any preparation for my log cabin?

Yes you will need to ensure that you have a strong, firm base which is level to build your log cabin upon. If you are replacing an old shed or cabin, then this will be fairly easy as you simply need to check that the base is still in good condition. However if you are building a brand new base then there is some more work involved.
