Building a Base for your Shed

It is very important to get the right base and foundations in place in order to make sure your shed will last long and be durable during tough weather conditions. Before buying a garden shed or any other type of garden building, you must consider where you are going to base it and if you need to do any work to make this base safe to use.

It may be the case that you are simply replacing an old garden shed and therefore you have a base already in place. However if you do not have one in place, you need to consider what type of base you will use.

The main types of base are -

  1. Concrete Base
  2. Slab Base
  3. Pressure Treated Bearers

The main differences between the different types of bases are the labour and money involved in setting them up. Obviously the concrete and slab bases will cost much more in both time, materials and labour to complete. Whereas the pressure treated bearers are far cheaper but are only really suitable for smaller garden sheds and buildings, probably 6x4 and 7x5.

There are new types of bases available which come ready made and can can be laid down very easily and quickly.

The portabase can be fitted to grass or solid ground and adjusted so that when the shed is placed on top of it, it will be level whilst balancing safely.

Whichever base you decide to build then you need to take time and make sure that you do it the correct way from the start. Building a garden shed on unsafe foundations is very dangerous and you should take good care when building the base. You will benefit long term by doing it the right way first time.

Metal Sheds - Are they better?

If you are looking for a way to add more storage space to your home then getting one of the many different metal sheds is the way to go. The reason why so many people are preferring to buy metal rather than wooden ones is that they are much cheaper.

But as well as being cheap to buy, initially such sheds are far easier and cheaper to maintain as well. Plus when it comes to actually assembling these sheds, you will find that this task is much easier to do as well.

When choosing which metal shed it is you want to use you have a choice between a numbers of different materials. Most people prefer theirs to be made from either galvanized steel or aluminium, which are extremely durable.

Along with the advantages mentioned above there are plenty of other reasons why one would prefer to have a metal shed rather than a wooden one in ones garden. Firstly, these kinds of sheds are actually very easy to construct and they do not require foundations to be laid before they can be built. This means you do not have to spend considerable sums of money getting a good foundation laid either by doing it yourself or getting a contractor into do it for you.

In a large number of cases, many of the sheds that you can now purchase in kit form in order to allow you to set them up quickly. Usually you can expect it to take around half a day to have one of these kinds of sheds up and ready for use. Plus in most cases, they also come with additional shelves that quickly attach to the insides of the walls.

However, one of the biggest advantages to be gained from having a metal rather than a wooden shed in your garden is the cost of maintaining it. Where with a wooden shed you will need to regularly protect it using either a good quality varnish or wood protector. Many metal sheds are coated in a layer of protective material that makes them impervious to what the elements are likely to throw at them.

Originally, these kinds of sheds were made using materials, which proved to be an eyesore in the garden. However, now they are coated in colors that often help to make sure that they blend into the background.

However when it comes to selecting which of the various metal sheds you need you should look closely at what you require the shed for. Only after this can you then choose the right kind of shed for installation in your garden. Also, look at where it is going to be located and ensure that it does not affect your neighbours in any way.

Looking for other Garden Storage?

When it comes to garden storage you need to take your time over selecting the right shed for this purposes.  There are certain things that one must take into consideration that can help you to determine just which shed is right for you.  Things like how often it is going to be used along with what you can afford to spend on yours.

Another thing that one needs to take into consideration when it comes to buying a shed to use for garden storage is the size.  This is crucial because if you don’t take this into consideration you are sure to be disappointed because you simply won’t have the space to store everything away and still be able to reach it easily.  But you shouldn’t buy too big a shed if you haven’t got the space.  So factor in this to your equations when determining what shed is going to best to meet your particular requirements.

Along with what we have mentioned above there are a number of other things that one needs to take into consideration before you invest money in a garden storage shed.  In this article we take a look at just what some of these things are.

If you are someone who feels that they don’t have the skills or the time to erect the shed themselves then it is worth finding out if the company selling it offer an installation service.  In some cases this may be offered to you for free but in others you may need to pay a small fee for the work to be carried out.  So if you are not intending to erect the shed yourself then factor in this additional cost to what you can actually afford to spend on yours.

However if you are someone who feels that they are capable of erecting the shed to use for garden storage then there are plenty of kits now available.  A great many of these are designed to allow you to easily slot the various pieces together and with help from a family member or friend can be erected in just a couple of hours, so not only saving you time but also money.

To determine the style and size of shed for your garden look at what you intend to keep in yours.  Certainly if it is for storing all your gardening equipment including a lawn mower make sure that you opt for one that allows you to move such large pieces of equipment in an out of it easily.  It may therefore be an idea to choose the sheds that come with wide or double doors.  Plus if you intend to use yours for carrying out small gardening tasks like potting of seeds make sure that there is ample space for a work area and also one that allows plenty of natural light to come into.

As mentioned above you shouldn’t rush selecting your garden storage shed.  So it is worth actually visiting your local DIY store or garden centre to check some various models out.  Then when you have decided on which one meets your requirements best now spend time comparing the prices that they are being offered for.  Go online and you may be surprised that you can get a great deal on your shed and won’t need to concern yourself with getting the item home as the company will arrange delivery directly to your door.

You certainly know a lot about bases. I hope you have never built a base on the sand. There some houses around Dee Why Beach at this moment which are not looking too stable.

If you don't build a proper foundation, you may void your shed warranty. They usually have pretty specific foundation instructions that include anchoring the shed to the base.

Fabric garage 17 months ago

This article brings up an interesting issue regarding the mounting surface or shed base. A fabric covered garage serves a similar purpose and also should be mounting to a wood base. Any type of storage shed or garage requires a foundation or base.
