How to Set Up a Home Security System

Today many homeowners are choosing to install home security alarms in their homes to protect their home and families. There are a couple of options for homeowners who decide to take on this task.

A supervised wireless home security system is an easy to install an alarm. It works by using radio waves which monitor sensors. These sensors communicate with a control panel placed in a safe area in the home, like a closet or basement. Homeowners can connect to a central monitoring station owned by a reputable security company. These alarms are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

A second option for the homeowner is a self contained alarm system. With this system the alarm is plugged directly into an electrical outlet in the home. One advantage to this system is that t can be easily removed if needed. This type of burglar alarm can be purchased for $150.00 or less.

If a homeowner decides to install an alarm system there are several things to keep in mind including:

  • The strength of the signal in the area needs to be checked before installation. Homeowners should also take into consideration any background noise that is frequently heard in the area.
  • Signal transmission is affected by metal. Avoid mounting the components for the system near metal which sometimes surrounds windows and doors.
  • Aerials should not be close to any wiring in the transmitters or receivers. This could also cause signal interference.
  • The receivers should never be mounted close to televisions, computers or metal.

Remote aerials should be checked for correct orientation when mounted. The aerial cable should not be run next to main cables. Other cables should not be clipped close to aerial cables.

The receiver should be mounted high enough to receive a signal in areas with a weak signal. For example, walls that are very thick will cause a weak signal.

The potential location for installation should be surveyed carefully before beginning.
